Mental Theo – West Coast Mix 01

It’s been a little while since I’ve written anything on house/electronica material so indulge me in my odd attempt. I’ve always had a good deal of respect for Gnar Tapes with its extremely unique while ferociously independent. Admittedly, I was puzzled then when I received a seemingly gaudy email on what looks like an anxsty teenager’s cover art (yes, I’m being mean but I promise it goes uphill from here). Still, the story got me hooked. As described by Gnar Tapes, “Dutch “Gabber” DJ Mental Theo (aka Theo Nabuurs) has been making hardcore electronic dance music since the early 90s. After scoring a few big Happy Hardcore hits in Europe with their songs “Wonderful Days” and “Stars” alongside fellow countryman Charly Lownoise, Theo continued on to become a VJ on the European version of MTV. During the late 90s he hosted his own European MTV show called “Mental Theo On The Road“, in which he visited various nightclubs across Europe interviewing and interacting with partygoers, including a “Spring Break Special” report on the American club scene in Florida.”

It was that start which urged me to go ahead and take a listen. Spanning a little under an hour, I’m glad I did. As Gnar Tapes continues to state, “West Coast Mix 01” is the result of how educational and fun the Internet has made cassette culture” with “a unique mix of a Dutch Hardcore and Gabber records and remixes”. Now to use my only words. Irony is certainly a beautiful thing, however too much serves as a gluttonous mask to true identity. Luckily, Theo, through his years of experience and active participation, appears to understand this exact balance, an attribute I greatly admire. Sure, he uses humorous bits and pieces as well as highly overdone mixes. However there appears to be no embarrassment in this use, rather a primal pride that shines through. Take a listen, hell grab the actual, physical copy (cause come on, an hour of Dutch Hardcore on a car trip: I know you want to). It’s been awhile since I’ve written on this kind of material, yet Theo is more than deserving of the article. Enjoy.

April ’12 Mixtape

*Cough Cough* The intention of these mixtapes are purely noncommercial: rather, it is simply to promote smaller acts that have a great sound to them. Furthermore, all releases within any and every mixtape include tracks that were provided for free by the artists themselves anyways. Well I’m glad to get that over with. It’s been awhile since the March ’12 Mixtape so it’s with great honor that us here at Dissociative Identity Productions introduce to you, the bored or possibly intoxicated viewer, the April ’12 Mixtape.

Since we are all done with the introductions, please take a listen and be sure to share it with friends, family, or just random folks. Downloads are available for free and are, as always, encouraged. You can decide what you like the most but as for myself? I’d say You Slut! who have been on the radio show many a times and I believe I have included them in one of the mixtapes a while ago. Despite to say, if you like some Math Rock with some balls, Track Clagg may be for you.

With that said, grab a download and decide for yourself. It’s been fun getting back into the swing of the monthly mixtapes so I assure you, May ’12 Mixtape should be even better. Anyways, see ya in a week for The Sound of Funk and be sure to catch our newest radio program, “BoerLore“, every Wednesday from 12:00 – 1:00 pm for some good, olde fashioned West African/Caribbean Psychedelic Rock and Reggae. Enjoy.

November ’11 Mixtape

It’s been awhile. Admittedly, way too long. And to be honest, I actually did enjoy surfing through the web, finding what free gems that great artists were giving out. With that in mind, let me personally welcome, back from Hiatus, the Dissociative Identity Mixtape Series.

Restarting with November ’11 Mixtape, we will be releasing a mixtape once per month. Yeah, pretty self explanatory. Still, between 65daysofstatic and Nurses, I like to think that this is a particularly great edition. Again, I would like to point out that all mp3’s provided were provided free by the artists themselves and that I intend to gain no money from the sharing of these tracks. Rather, I like to think that music is a collective experience, where by the more people who get involved, the better is.

Anyways take a listen and share it if ya like it. See ya in two weeks for Spring Snow over at New Angle Lounge, Thurs, December 1, for more holiday spirits. Till then.

August ’11 Mixtape

It’s a bitter happiness to talk to friends about “Summer“. See, I’ve been taking classes and stressing/sweating for 2 and a half months now to just claim this tiny, insignificant 2 week break. To most, it’s just as depressing as I’m making this sound. Yet to me, I see my Summer almost just beginning. Like some kind of weird purgatory, August New Angle Night provided a much needed, opportunity to reflect on the summer. Yet I really do not see this as signaling the end, necessarily, a point that I hope the release of August ’11 Mixtape will make clear. As usual, let me point out that all of the tracks supplied in this collection were offered, for free, by the artists themselves. There is no financial gains being made here, rather the intention is to truly spread the word about great acts. Anyways be sure to take a listen through the compilation. As far as the fall, be sure to check out the events page here or on the Facebook page to learn more about “Autumn Twilight“, starting with our monthly edition of New Angle Night, September New Angle Night, and all of our other plans. As for me? I’m going to the beach or something: it may be the end of August to you but to me, it’s 1969 in the Sunshine. Ok, that was a fairly geeky, music reference but you get it. Listen, Share, Enjoy, and see ya soon.

July ’11 Mixtape

In honor of our first ever Dubstep Confederacy, as part of our Summer Haze @ New Angle Lounge activities, Dissociatve Identity Productions is proud to present the July ’11 Mixtape. Featuring free tracks from local artists and DJ’s, the July ’11 Mixtape is the first mixtape we’ve released that will be exclusively Dubstep/House/Trance. As mentioned in the past, all tracks provided here were provided for free by the artists themselves and no financial or monetary gain is pursued through this release. Rather it is simply to expose folks to all the great, new acts in the area. Furthermore, the July ’11 Mixtape will also serve as a great preview for the upcoming Reality Check. With all of the artists represented on this compilation, the July ’11 Mixtape should introduce followers and kids just looking for a good time to DirtyDave, EuniQ DJ, Ben Pramuck, Jack Deezl, and Night Kids. Always be sure to check it out, grab a download, and share it around for anyone and everyone who could be interested. With a world of copyrights, D.I. prefers to be copyleft. June ’11 Mixtape

Dissociative Identity Productions June '11 Mixtape

Summer has come at long last and with it, but of course, must come Dissociative Identity Productions June ’11 Mixtape. This is the third month we’ve been doing this and frankly, its been quicte interesting. Surfing through the internet for little, free pearls can lead to awkward encounters…

As I’ve said before, all of the above tracks were provided free by the artists themselves and there is no intention for financial benefits through these mixtapes. Rather it is to encourage curiosity in those who don’t necessarily know what they’re looking for. Believe, by definition, Dissociative Identity understands.

So take a listen through the June ’11 Mixtape, share it with your friends, but most importantly, check out the great acts that are featured in these collections. You may be surprised but I actually take some time on these: not everything makes the cut (thank god).

Anyways enjoy summer folks and stay tuned for all of Dissociative Identity Productions Summer Plans on the “Events” tab above.

Thanks for your time, your attention, hell your interest and I look forward to seeing ya guys this summer. Talk to ya soon.
